About

Benedict Hutchinson

I’m 24 and moved to Manchester in 2024, having graduated from Cardiff University in 2022, where I studied English Literature and Creative Writing. At current, I work as a bartender, and I spend my free time writing, making short films, and studying Spanish.

Both film and writing have long been passions of mine, and so the majority of what you’ll find here at benedicthutchinson.com are a variety of film ‘reviews’, all of which can be found on the homepage or under the menu ‘Notes on Cinema.’ I put ‘reviews’ purposefully in inverted commas, for I feel that for the most part these essays are not typical film reviews but rather explorations and examinations of my thoughts and feelings towards film as an art form. Hence, you’ll find that I don’t typically offer recommendations of the films I write about. Instead, I tend to use each film as an entry point into a discussion about film in general and what I believe it should and should not be. Hence, there will be a lot about each film that I do not mention or examine in depth. This is purposeful. The aim of these essays as a collective is to help bring me some further clarity of exactly what my thoughts are concerning this art form which I love.

With each film I make myself, I aim to experiment with the arguments I set forth in these essays. This way, I attempt to make films based on the beliefs I hold of what film should be, and not on the beliefs of others which can only lead to the creation of something inauthentic. I plan to upload my first short film Blind Cattle here, alongside a piece of writing explaining why I created it, in the near future.

Outside of this, I also enjoy travel writing, and so amongst the various film essays you will be able to find the occasional piece of writing about some trip or adventure that I’ve taken.

Picking favourite films is something I find impossible, but my favourite author just now is Ernest Hemingway.

I hope you enjoy reading what you find here, and please feel free to leave any thoughts you have in the comments at the bottom of each post, or alternatively get in touch with me directly.

All the best, Benedict.
